Hydraulic engineering for the maritime and offshore industry

Hydraulic systems are applied when large forces or torques are required e.g., winches, pipe laying equipment, and cranes. In addition hydraulic systems are applied in several sub-sea installations and onboard spaces where electrical systems are not allowed.
Engineers often lack specific hydraulic knowledge, which hinders effective preventive maintenance and problem solving during breakdowns. This course pro-vides the essential knowledge to engineers that allow them to maintain hydraulic systems and conduct corrective maintenance when required.

Goals

• Basic and advanced knowledge of hydraulic components
• Ability to read hydraulic drawings and reference material
• Ability to understand and work with complex hydraulic systems
• Ability to perform corrective and preventive maintenance

Course contents

• Hydraulic control valves e.g., flow direction valves, flow control valves and pressure control valves
• Hydraulic auxiliary components e.g. pilot operated non return valves, non return valves, couplings, pipes, and hoses
• Hydraulic pumps, hydraulic motors, and hydraulic cylinders
• Hydraulic oil and filter systems
• Pump control systems and proportional control systems
• Preventive and corrective maintenance

Target group

The course is designed for engineers in the maritime and offshore industry working with; however lacking knowledge of hydraulic systems. Please consult ROVC when you doubt if your current technical knowledge is sufficient or commence with the course Basis hydrauliek, inspectie en 1e lijns onderhoud prior to starting with this course.PracticumThe course includes practical training sessions. Different case studies allow the student to explore different basic and complex hydraulic systems. The case studies are designed to prepare and educate the student to locate malfunctioning parts and to conduct corrective maintenance.
