Leadership and Management Skills

Do you work in an international environment? Are you a manager from abroad who has recently taken on a management position in the Netherlands? Then chances are you have not only been confronted with the stresses and strains that come with any new job, you have probably also stumbled across some uncertainties resulting from working in a culture which is not your own. Even without being aware, you may have already dealt with situations differently than your superiors or colleagues. And it isn't a matter of 'correct' or 'incorrect' management. It's just that you were departing from your own cultural perspective and assumptions. Surely, it will take some time before you fully understand the intricacies of the Dutch working and management culture. This training extensively covers essential leadership and management skills. But above all, it emphasizes the specific aspects of the Dutch working and management culture, keeping in mind the differences between organizations.

Target group

This training is suitable for you if you:

• do not have the Dutch nationality;
• recently started working in a management position;
• are currently working in the Netherlands;
• have a Bachelor's degree or higher ('HBO+' in Dutch).

This training is not specifically suitable for:

• foreigners with experience in working in a management position;
• Dutch people who would like to follow a management training in English.

Result

On completion of this training, you will be able to adapt your management style to the requirements of your staff, colleagues, superiors and other stakeholders. You will master a range of essential leadership and management skills and tools, including several models. You will be aware of your pitfalls and you will know how to avoid them which will increase your effectiveness at work. Dealing with the dilemmas of being a manager, recognizing and resolving issues arising from cultural misunderstandings, are no longer a problem for you. You will be a pro in alternating between the various roles of manager, leader and coach. But most importantly; you will have found your own style as a foreign manager working in a Dutch management culture.

Part 1: Managing your own role and position

• managerial roles;
• management in a multicultural setting;
• loyalty issues;
• authority;
• expectations.

Part 2: The interaction between you and your employee

• motivation;
• motivation by influencing;
• stress and emotions;
• Leary's rose: influencing problematic behaviour;
• situational leadership;
• delegating.

Duration

The total run time of the training is 3 months. The training consists of an intake, 2 blocks of 2 days, 1 block of 1 day and intervision meetings.

The training starts with a one-on-one conversation with your trainer. The goal of the conversation is to discuss and lay down your goals and motivation. Sometimes, you will realize that other trainings, or even individual paths, are more suitable for your learning needs. Upon this conclusion, we will give you advice, in which we will also involve your organization (our client). At the end of the intake, you will receive your training materials, or we will send them to you. In most cases, you will also receive a preparatory exercise for the first training session.
