Notes

  • Explore PowerBuilder 12.0’s two development IDEs (Integrated Development Environments) - the Classic IDE and the new .NET IDE. This workshop class will focus strictly on the new .NET IDE based on the Visual Studio Isolated Shell.
  • Since PowerBuilder .NET sits on top of the Visual Studio shell you will need to learn new terminology, how to navigate within the new .NET IDE, and the many new features that come with this .NET IDE. For instance, you will learn how to create WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) applications, which replaces the “legacy” Windows Forms applications as well as the Win32 applications you currently create in PowerBuilder. In order to take advantage of the WPF, you will need to explore and learn XAML. While this Boot Camp does not cover XAML in great detail, you will be given enough information to start down the learning path. Skinning of a PowerBuilder application will be covered. Hands-on exercises will accelerate your ability to quickly understand and use the new features of the WPF DataWindow, including the use of Custom Controls and how you might use the many new graph types.
  • Other features that will be explored and used in the workshop include: Interfaces, Enumerations, Properties, Indexers Namespaces, Overloaded Constructors -- features that have been a part of the .NET world but are now available to you in PowerBuilder.
  • Learn to use .NET classes and their methods (found in the .NET Framework itself or created by .NET developers in C#. VB .NET, etc.) inside the PowerBuilder IDE. PowerBuilder consumes .NET objects, now without the conditional code blocks that were required in the 11.X versions. You will learn how to inherit from .NET classes while in PowerBuilder, giving you the chance to override methods in .NET classes. .NET types may also be used in PowerBuilder functions (returns or arguments).
  • Lastly, we will have a discussion on the WCF (Windows Communications Foundation), so that you will be able to use the new WCF Proxy to call a WCF Service during class.
